Astrakhan region is located in the south of Russia in the lower reaches of the Volga River near the Caspian Sea. By land, the region borders on Kazakhstan, on the sea – with Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan and also Kazakhstan. In Russia the Astrakhan region borders on the Volgograd region and the Republic of Kalmykia. Astrakhan, the administrative center of the region, is often called the “Volga Venice”. The city is located on dozens of islands, and all its areas are connected by a network of bridges and canals.
