Squirrel

Squirrels are nimble, bushy-tailed rodents found all over the world. They belong to the Sciuridae family, which includes prairie dogs, chipmunks and marmots.

Features

Behavior:

Squirrels communicate with each other through various vocalisations and scent marking. And they also use their tails as a signalling device, twitching it when uneasy to alert other squirrels of potential danger.

Habitat:

Squirrels are forest dwellers. They primarily eat nuts and seeds, but will also eat berries, fungus and insects. Squirrels horde food in small amounts in several locations when it’s abundant. Some caches of seeds are never recovered and instead become seedlings.

On the territory of Russia, they live in forests almost everywhere.

Active:

The best time of year to hunt for squirrels is during the fall months when they are foraging for food. Squirrel movement decreases significantly in the winter months, with some squirrel species even hibernating during this time. Spring is also a busy time of year for squirrels as the come out of their dens in search of food.

Squirrels are typically active all day, especially during the fall and spring months when they are more actively in search of food. However, as with most animals, your best chances to hunt are during the hours of dawn and dusk.

Methods of hunting permitted for use:

  • stalking,
  • ambush hunting,
  • trapping (automatic trap)

Permitted hunting tools:

Hunting fire smooth-bore long-barreled arms; firearm with a rifled barrel of caliber no more than 8 mm and a seating distance of not more than 51 mm (including a caliber of 5.6 mm for a rim-fire cartridge); hunting firearm combined weapons (smooth-bore and rifted gun), including with rebarreling and auxiliary rifled barrels of 5.6 mm caliber for rim-fire cartridge; traps (automatic traps), including deadfalls of various types, mole traps, cherkans (wooden traps for animals living in lodges), gin traps, snares, and other analogues of automatic traps, as well as nets, cages, live traps and etc; cold bladed hunting weapon. It is allowed to use a hunting pneumatic weapon with a muzzle energy of no more than 25 J for taking a chipmunk, ground squirrel, ground squirrel, hamster, water vole.

Fur

In general, their fur is soft and silky, though much thicker in some species than others. The coat color of squirrels is highly variable between—and often even within—species.

The squirrel fur is beautiful, but not durable, so it doesn’t value much.
