Nizhny Novgorod region is one of the most economically developed regions of the Russian Federation in the Volga Federal District. The region is located in the central part of the East European Plain. Its total area is 76.9 thousand square km. Population – 3,324 thousand people. The administrative center is the city of Nizhny Novgorod. Its population is 1.5 million inhabitants.


Nizhny Novgorod region is rich in lakes, rivers, swamps. So fishing here is simply fantastic and attracts many amateurs and professionals. Hunting and fishing in the Nizhny Novgorod 

Lakes of the Nizhny Novgorod region are mainly concentrated in the Volga region among sand dunes, where glacial waters once stayed. These dune-glacial lakes are mostly shallow and overgrown with sedge, but there are also legendary ones that have preserved great depth. Like the Svetloyar lake, which is up to 30 meters deep.

The largest lakes in the region are of artificial origin and have been created by man near factories and power plants. These are a huge Gorkovskoe reservoir, Polderevskoe reservoir and etc. All the lakes of the region are used as fisheries.

Fish gifts of the lakes are represented by such stocks as pike, zander, catfish, perch, burbot, bream, ide, large roach, bream, tench, crucian carp and many other kinds of fish. There is a huge number of fishing bases, specially equipped for fishermen from distant places. Fishing on the lakes of Nizhny Novgorod region gathers fans from all over the country and, of course. Most of the trophies can be caught on paid water bodies, which are serviced in a special way and where fish are bred.

Also, many large rivers trend through this corner of Russia. These are the Volga (part of its water area is the Gorky and Cheboksary reservoirs), Oka, Piana, Kerzhenets, Vetluga, Alatyr, Uzola, Linda, Sura, Kudma, Sundovik and Tesha. In total, the river network has more than 9000 water bodies (including streams). Fishermen refer the Shirmoksha, Syava, Yakhra and Trotsa to fishy rivers. There are perch, pike, pike perch, Volga zander and asp in the flowing water bodies.

There is also another big reservoir on the lands of Nizhny Novgorod in addition to already mentioned – the Veleminskoye reservoir. There is always a lot of perch. Sport fishing often takes place near the village of Veletma.

Fishing in Nizhny Novgorod region is associated with a number of restrictions. In spring it is strictly forbidden to catch fish in spawning pits. First of all, inspectors of fishery supervision keep in touch with the situation in the lower reach of the Gorky reservoir (control zone 5 kilometers). In many fishing areas it is not allowed to use water transport during the spawning period. And it is forbidden to  drive a car up to a waterline.

Nevertheless, fishing nets are found in many places… In the regional Red Book are included Russian sturgeon, sterlet, starry sturgeon, Volga herring, Volga shed, beluga, bitterling, grayling, trout, river minnow, sneep, common spirlin, European lamrey, Caspian lamprey, common bullhead.


Nizhny Novgorod region is rich in different possible activities, however hunting in Nizhny Novgorod region stands on a special place. A wolf, a bear, a hare, all kinds of fur-bearing animals. A wild boar, an elk, other ungulates, all varieties of meadow, upland and waterfowl live in local fields and forests.

Hunting in the Nizhny Novgorod region takes place on the territory of 60 public hunting facilities located in all districts of the region. The local events have a number of differences. An additional fee is charged to the main one for hunting capercaillie, black grouse, bear, elk and wild boar (limited species of wild game). There are many rest zones on the territory of hunting grounds.

There are some restrictions on hunting in Nizhny Novgorod related to the Red Book. Such commercial wild game as European roe deer, reindeer. European mink, lynx, wolverine, otter, chipmunk, all loons and grebe, black and white storks, small bittern and gray heron are included in it.
